DVD reviews

No cinema for a while, so I'll be Lovefilm'ing for the foreseeable future. This months films were The Losers and The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

The Losers is the tale of a special forces unit that gets set-up and goes seeking revenge, it's a comic book adaptation and they've all been great recently, so it should be good right?  Unfortunately no.  It's trite, obvious and a complete let down. All the best bits are directly lifted from the comic and shine, unfortunately they are trying to shine through the muddied waters of the dross that has been written to link these gems together.

The worse bit about watching things on DVD is the opportunity to see the deleted scenes or in this case scene.  I saw this after the brilliant epilogue and just thought why?  They had a beautiful premise of a shadowy villain and a bunch of anti-heroes (from the deleted scene it looked like that was the original script) and they changed that for 'Look we're real because we get injured but carry on fighting! Heroes' versus a Lex Luthor high tech eco-terrorist supervillian?

Sorry, but I don't want cheap-ass version of the A-Team. This was a DC Vertigo title and the film script should have been written to reflect this with a 15 or 18 certificate in mind.

On the other hand, The Sorcerer's Apprentice delivers what it advertises, a fun Disney hero action flick.  There are some great moments in this film and most of the training sequences are laugh out loud funny, even the enchanted mop sequence is very well done (that's not a spoiler, the film's called The Sorcerer's Apprentice, what else would you expect to be in it?)

So, recommendations:  I'd put The Sorcerer's Apprentice on a par with The Never-ending story as a film that will stick in an 8 year old's head.  The premise that you don't have to go to Hogwarts to study magic, you could instead just walk into a weird old shop one day and be given something that will change your life.  (I wonder if that's why I like reading so much? I was brain-washed!)

The Losers I'd put on a par with AVP, watchable and even enjoyable in parts but if you had a choice go for something else.

Well I suppose I ought to get started again...

...as the new arrival is a fortnight old and I did go to GIMPS last Thursday.  ;-)

I didn't fulfil my quota for this month as I only managed to complete one unit of 30 boyz and half coat a second.

Anyway, for your perusal and marking gents:

I figured I'd get bored just painting Mobs all the time.

Works in progress

This is what I've got done so far this month...

Still got to paint the metal and fine detail the mob of boyz, hopefully manage that next week.

In the interim I've been playing with the Instamold and have managed to cast some jumppacks for the 2nd Ed Orks, so they'll become Stormboyz and I even had a crack at molding an entire model (or two).  The results are passable but it isn't something I'd want to try on a regular basis as structurally the models are very soft and it isn't really cost effective (as well as being dubiously legal).

Given that it's just one more unit of boyz I'll probably use month four to finish the army and then use months five and six to three colour and base the remaining models. (I really should spend half an hour pointing them up)

Edit: Yeah, I just spent 15 minutes putting the Orks into Army Builder... 5240pts... Oh, shi(transmission interrupted)

Tuesday, 14 June 2011

There will be a hiatus...

but with good reason this time, baby two has arrived!

See you folks soon!

Sunday, 12 June 2011

The Beginning...

Well here's the painting project:

210 Ork boyz
60 Gretchin and handlers
6 Nob Bikers
1 Warboss on bike
1 Weirdboy
1 Warboss with PowerKlaw
Deff Dread
10 Flash Gitz & Battlewagon
10 Kommandos
12 Lootas
10 Burnaboyz
6 Deffkoptas
Oh and if I get chance 2 Fightabombaz and a Mega Deffdread...

Thanks sooo very much chaps, but sarcasm aside I am a man of my word so by Christmas this little lot will be finished!

The plan is, as I laid out on the forum thread, to paint a 650pts force by the end of the first month, up this to 1200pts by the end of the second, 1500pts by the end of the third and 1750pts & 2k by the end the fourth and fifth months respectively.  Additionally everything will be three colour minimum and based by Christmas and anyone who has an equivalent force painted to the same standard by then is welcome to challenge me in a unlimited turn annihilation battle in The Garage!

Good luck chaps!

I'm bloody shocking at this!

Yeah, erm... How the hell do people manage to do this on a daily basis?  Kudos to them!

Anyway, it's been a month so:

Films (Both Cinema and LoveFilm):

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2D)  =  Thumbs up!  Much better than the last one, I'm waiting for the next one where we find out Jack travels back in time to become his own dad.

Thor = Thumbs up!  Well-paced Marvel outing with good casting.  Wasn't sure when I heard Brannagh was directing but he did a damn fine job and the only let-downs were script based.

Blitz = Meh!  It was good, but I felt like I was watching C4 make the Bill.

Hangover Part 2 = Again Meh. It's the same bloody film as the first one without the WTF elements.

Bee Movie = Really enjoyed Ray Liotta hamming it up!

Harry Brown = Wow!  Amazing film, just don't watch the extras or you'll end up wanting to ram your fist down the young actor's throat.

The Ghost Writer = WHAT A WASTE OF TWO HOURS!  This film is critically acclaimed and don't get me wrong, it's beautifully shot and the acting is very good but the script... is awful!  Seriously, this is labelled as a suspense thriller but if you don't know how it's going to end by the time you're halfway into it there's something seriously wrong with you.

Other stuff:

Starting this week will be my contribution to the Tale of Six (Seven? More?) Gamers on the GIMPS forum,  they've properly stitched me up by nominating my chosen army to be the Orks.  It's not too bad as all the models are made up but there's more than a couple of them...
