Eh? What? Already?

(Oops this should have posted at the end of July but for some reason didn't)

Well that's the end of a damn hectic month!  Progress made... sod all, do I care? Not at all. ;-)

Personal life's taken priority during July:  Lou's birthday and operation, Granddad moving house (i.e. me helping with removals, painting and decorating), end of school for another year, Toy Soldier and a week catching up on quality time with my girls.

So, to the only thing you'll be interested in...  Toy Soldier 2012

Damn did I need this weekend: I managed to properly relax in the company of friends for the first time in months, eat too much good food, drink lots of alcohol and lose at 40k.  Anyway to the games:

On the Friday Jim and Bender John nipped around to the garage to test out their lists, Jim annihilated me in three turns but suffered equal ruin against John's Scarab farm.  I realised immediately that I'd be taking the wrong list but it was now submitted so too late to change it.  Here it is:

Saturday morning and after setting off at stupid o'clock I arrived at the hotel in Stockport at 8am to meet Dan and Jim for breakfast, an all you can eat for £8.25 Beefeater breakfast where they cook your full English to order!  (Needless to say minor snacking was all that was required until the evening meal).  At quarter past nine we meandered over the road and completed the gruelling (not) five minute walk to the venue.

Registration complete and the first draws are made, immediately we realise a problem.  Of the eleven registered 40k players, six attend SR on a regular basis.  Fears become reality and I'm drawn against Jimbo, sod that says I and ask for a swap... I get Dan, but I've only been playing him at WFB, Mordheim and BB recently so it wasn't too bad.

Game 1 - Dan is fielding his lovely orange and grey IG, he looked at my army, I looked at his roughly:

      1 Scout Sentinel, 40 pts = (base cost 35 + Autocannon 5)
      1 Scout Sentinel, 40 pts = (base cost 35 + Autocannon 5)

This is going to be a draw we said in unison and despite our best efforts to the contrary it was, even using VP there was only 105 points between us so 10 points a piece.

Game 2 - I get to stay on the same table and play against Chris Baker who is also fielding Orks.  The major difference is most of his points are tied up in a single ten Nob biker squad that is every much as dirty as it sounds.  I say the major difference, but there were in fact two.  Those who know of Chris will have seen his ork army in the display cabinets at GW Meadowhall and damn is it sweet!  The best unit though has to be the DeffKoptas which are scratch built to resemble Star Wars Pod racers.  Back to the game and I realise there were actually three major differences (someone warn me if the Spanish Inquisition turn up), I had taken Slugga boyz for the CC madness, Chris had taken Shoota boyz and made me pay for my naivety.  Thirty boyz at 18" Assault 2 is actually a shed-load of dice so who cares if you're only hitting on a 5+? Anyway, Chris' list looked a little like this:

End result, massacred 20-0, I conceded at the end of turn 4 as despite my best efforts I'd not managed to bring a single unit below half strength.

Game 3 - I draw stand-in man who is making up the numbers for several systems and using SM models out of the display cabinets.  I'm facing roughly this:

1750 Pts - Codex: Space Marines Roster

Total Roster Cost: 1740

HQ: Shadow Captain Kayvaan Shrike (1#, 195 pts)
1 Shadow Captain Kayvaan Shrike, 195 pts

HQ: Space Marine Chaplain in Power Armour (1#, 115 pts)
1 Space Marine Chaplain in Power Armour, 115 pts = (base cost 100) + Jump Pack 15

Elite: Terminator Assault Squad (10#, 400 pts)
   9 Terminator Assault Squad, 360 pts = 9 * 40
      1 Sergeant, 40 pts

Heavy Support: Vindicator (1#, 135 pts)
   1 Vindicator, 135 pts = (base cost 115 + Pintle-mounted Storm Bolter 10) + Siege Shield 10

Elite: Ironclad Dreadnought (1#, 135 pts)

   9 Tactical Squad, 157 pts = 9 * 16 (base cost 16) + Plasma gun 10 + Sergeant 26
      1 Sergeant, 23 pts

Troops: Tactical Squad (10#, 180 pts)

      1 Sergeant, 23 pts

Troops: Tactical Squad (10#, 180 pts)
   9 Tactical Squad, 157 pts = 9 * 16 (base cost 16) + Plasma gun 10 + Sergeant 26
      1 Sergeant, 23 pts

Fast Attack: Assault Squad (10#, 220 pts)
   9 Assault Squad, 192 pts = 9 * 18 (base cost 18) + Plasma Pistol 15 + Plasma Pistol 15
      1 Sergeant, 28 pts

Highlights include; the tissue armoured terminators, the battlewagon being wrecked turn 1, the Chaplain assaulting into b2b with my PK Nob (snip), another Nob going toe to toe with an Ironclad and making it explode killing 6 boyz then pull the same trick in the following turn against the Vindicator, the Deffkoptas finally showing up in turn 5 and killing Shrike with a rokkit in the face.

In a game of phenomenally poor dice rolling on both sides I end up losing 17-3 due to the fact I couldn't kill off a single infantry unit, both the assault marine and terminator squads had one model left at the end of the game.

End of Day One and its back to the hotel for a meal, a bottle of wine and stares from the local clientèle as we try to get to grips with Munchkin Chulthu, Braggart and Chulthu Dice.

Day 2 begins in the same manner with another massive £8.25 all you can eat breakfast then a stroll across to the venue.

Game 4 My battering in game three drops me to second to bottom and I play against probably the nicest competitor there, Rob Wright and his Dark Angels that looked something like this:

1750 Pts - Dark Angels Roster

1 Librarian in Power Armour, 120 pts

Heavy Support: Vindicator (1#, 125 pts)
   1 Vindicator, 125 pts

I had first turn and having remembered to make the Deffkoptas scout move before turn one, moved into position to fire on the side of the vindicator making it go Boom!  After that it was pretty much all over as Rob had built his tactics around it. The Battlewagon held the left flank and the boyz mobbed the rest of the field.  By the end of the game I held all three objectives, had blown up another two Dreadnoughts in close combat (was actually getting sick of rolling the six and losing boyz tbh!), crushed the two rhinos with the deffrolla, made mincemeat of the two tactical squads, command squad plus librarian bouncing me back up the table to face...

Game 5... Dan...again.  Its okay the scenario will be different! No not really, it was game one again without the night fighting.  We meta gamed it in three minutes declared it would be a draw barring terrible dice rolls so submitted that result, packed up and went to play Munchkin with the delightful, if unsuitably attired Chelsea who I managed to piss off within five minutes by ignoring her ample charms and asking her to stop cheating.  First game went to Chelsea despite this and Dan took the second as I was being gunned for.

Final standings for 40k:

40K

1. John Swallow
2. Chris Baker
3. Greg Mountford
4. Luke Dobson
5. Matt Rimington
6. Jamie Seddon
7. Peter Beswick
8. Vincent Keenaghan
9. Richard Thompson
10. Daniel Haslam
11. Rob Wright

Overall a very enjoyable weekend.
