If we consider the possibility that learners initially perceive the world through the lens of their passions, but lack merely the appropriate vocabulary to translate and articulate this to their audience, (Whiskey Vault, 2019) can we honestly say they are any less developed in their understanding of the fundamental concept? By labouring to a proscribed outcome, do we not risk increasing disjuncture (Jarvis, 2010) to the point where it gains the French quality of “ barbarique” which Frye translated as ‘something we can’t be bothered trying to understand.’ (2012, p. 96) .
